LIBERAL Democrat London mayoral candidate Simon Hughes visited Redbridge to meet local residents and view developments.

The visit included a trip to the proposed site of the City Racecourse at Fairlop Waters, during which Mr Hughes met Aldborough Hatch resident Ron Jeffries to hear the concerns of local people.

Mr Hughes also visited the Queen Mary and Westfield College site on Saturday, which was bought for £21 million by the Waltham Forest Friendly Society and RCT Construction last year.

Developers have put forward proposals to turn the site into flats and houses. Mr Hughes said he wanted to see for himself how large-scale developments could have a significant impact on the area.

Councillor Hugh Cleaver, leader of Redbridge Liberal Democrat Council group, said: "It's good to see that Simon Hughes is taking the time and trouble to visit Redbridge and get the views of local people."

Mr Hughes also met prospective Liberal Democrat candidate Matt Lake, standing for Redbridge and Havering in the Greater London Assembly elections, and European Parliament candidate Jonathan Fryer.
