SCHOOLS across Redbridge are on red alert following the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy.

The Fairlop Primary School pupil from Barkingside bravely fought off his attacker and managed narrowly to escape his clutches when the pervert tried to grab him in Fencepiece Road on Thursday, February 12 at just after 9am.

Police have warned schools to urge parents to step up security for their children, advising pupils not to travel on their own to and from school.

Redbridge police inspector Nigel Nottidge said: "The boy was aware he was being followed so he sped up and started running.

"The man caught up with him and grabbed hold of his arm and tried to make off with him, telling him 'you're coming with me', but the boy had his wits about him and kicked him in the stomach and the man lost his grip.

"The boy managed to run off and made it to school, where the mum of a friend took him to see the headteacher."

He added: "We're obviously very concerned. We need to identify this man as soon as possible. The boy was obviously very shaken up by the whole incident."

The man struck outside the Fairlop Oak pub and is described as white, aged 35 to 45, around 5ft 7ins tall, with ginger hair and was wearing a black woolly hat, white hooded jumper, black gloves and blue and white trainers.

Insp Nottidge added: "The school has sent a letter out to all parents advising them about the incident, as have all schools in the borough. The victim was walking to school on his own when he was attacked, but he is now being taken to school by his father.

"There have not been any other incidents in connection with this man. People should exercise caution and take care of their children."

Police are not linking the attack to the series of assaults carried out by a man with ginger hair in the early to mid-90s.

Any witnesses should contact Detective Constable George Avery at Ilford CID on 8345 2710.
