TRIBUTES have been paid to British serviceman Darren Chant who was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Walthamstow-born Mr Chant was one of five officers shot by an Afghan policeman while behind a secure checkpoint.

On Sunday the council will lay a wreath in honour of Warrant Officer Chant as part of the Remembrance Day commemorations at the town hall, in Forest Road.

Cllr Anna Mbachu, the mayor of Waltham Forest, said: "Darren Chant's untimely death in Afghanistan, serves to underline the courage and commitment of the UK's armed forces.

"On behalf of the London borough of Waltham Forest I would like to pay my sincere condolences to Darren Chant's family at this difficult time.”

Mr Chant, 40, had served in Ireland and Bosnia.

He had risen to the highest possible level within his regiment, the First Battalion Grenadier Guards.

After the tour it was his aspiration to go to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as Academy Sergeant Major.

It was then his intention to commission and join the Grenadier Guards' Officers' Mess.

Mr Chant is survived by his beloved wife Nausheen and three children from a previous marriage, Connor, Victoria and Adam.

Mrs Chant said: “"I am devastated by the loss of my husband. Our unborn son will never meet his father, but he will know him through his legacy.

“For whether in uniform or out, his incomparable courage and selflessness humbled all those who knew and loved him.

"His famed sense of humour lightened any situation. I will miss my best friend and nothing will fill the void he has left, my darling Darren.

“A natural born leader who led from the front. I am immensely proud to say he was my husband."

Sunday's memorial service begins at 11am.
