In 1974, musician and composer, Jo Collins, met Mary Ward, a teacher and director. With a shared belief in harnessing the creativity in everyone and anyone, they started a theatre company – in a chicken shed. The rest, they say, is history and to celebrate the pioneering company’s 35th anniversary, a host of celebrities will gather for a special Chickenshed gala at the Royal Albert Hall next Tuesday.
Guest of honour Joanna Lumley will lead celebrations, while comedian Victoria Wood, theatre star Maria Friedman and violinist Dmity Sitkovesky will all take to the stage. The evening will also include an exclusive ‘money-can’t-buy’ auction. Among the lots up for grabs, is the chance for 25 guests to train with the England Rugby Squad courtesy of Austin Healy.
But the real highlight of the evening will be a breathtaking cabaret performance from Chickenshed members, showcasing their award-winning productions of 2009.
All monies raised will go towards the £3million Chickenshed needs each year to continue its innovative and inclusive work. Tickets are available for the performance only, or to include a wine and a three-course meal or buffet.
Chickenshed’s 20th Annual Fundraising Gala takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, November 17. Tickets: 020 8292 9222 or www.chickenshed.org.uk (£10-£250)
