TOTTENHAM Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has expressed his relief that goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini's injuries are not life-threatening, after the player crashed his motorbike yesterday morning.

The 36-year-old is in hospital with "possibly life-changing" injuries after hitting a Ford Fiesta while riding his BMW R1200 GS bike at around 10.30am on Forest Road in Walthamstow.

The player fractured both wrists and badly injured his pelvis as he was thrown off the £11,000 bike.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who signed the keeper from Chelsea on a free transfer earlier this year, told a national newspaper: “I'm just thankful he hasn't broken his back, his neck or is dead. It could have killed him. I'm just relieved really. It's a shocking thing to happen.

“He's lucky to be alive. It could easily have been much worse. I didn't know he had a motorbike – clubs certainly don't encourage players to have them. But now isn't the time for that, we just wish him a quick recovery.”

The driver of the car, Jennifer Bernard, 25, was travelling with a young child but both were unhurt, despite the car being written off.

Roads were closed in the area after the crash, which is being investigated by the Chadwell Heath collision investigation unit. No arrests have been made.

A statement on the club's website said: "Carlo Cudicini has fractured his wrists and injured his pelvis after being involved in a road accident this morning.

"The 36-year-old Italian goalkeeper has been admitted to hospital and undergone scans under the supervision of club medical staff.

"The club will update supporters on Carlo as soon as there is any further information."

Premier League players often have clauses in their contracts stating that no dangerous activities, including riding a motorbike, should be done with the permission of the club.

Last night Tottenham confirmed no senior employee was aware the keeper had a motorbike. The club will have to decide whether he is breach of his contract after the full extent of his injuries becomes known.
