A SHOPPING service to help people with mobility problems has celebrated its 10th birthday.

Shopmobility opened in Selbourne Walk, in Walthamstow, ten years ago and has since helped hundreds of older and disabled people by lending them electric scooters and wheelchairs, or volunteer escorts.

The charity celebrated in Selborne Walk last Saturday with carol singing and teas.

Kathy Fullbrook from Chingford said: “Shopmobility really has changed my life. Before I joined, I was stuck in my flat all day, every day.

"Now they pick me up in a minibus and I get around the High Street on a scooter, under my own steam. I’ve also made friends with a few other members and don’t feel lonely or isolated any more."

More than 40 volunteers support the charity's part-time paid coordinator, who together arrange transport, lunches, exercise classes, chiropody sessions, bingo, tea and coffee mornings and day trips.

Anyone interested in joining, as a customer or volunteer, can visit the office from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm or call Shopmobility on 8520 3366.
