HOMES are being sought for greyhounds from the Stow who were adopted and then returned to the kennels.

Since the closure of Walthamstow Stadium, Chingford Road, two rehoming kennels have worked non-stop to find loving homes for the ex-racing dogs.

Although good homes have been found for most of these dogs, there are still some waiting in kennels and some which were rehomed have since been abandoned.

This is usually because of a change in the owner's circumstances, such as a marriage breakdown or change in working hours.

Johanna Beumer MBE, who has been rehoming greyhounds from Walthamstow Stadium for more than 43 years and who runs Whittingham Kennels in Waltham Abbey, said: “Sadly, sometimes dogs, through no fault of their own, have to be returned to the kennels.

"This is particularly sad as they are used to home comforts. It also adds to the numbers of Walthamstow dogs still looking for a home.”

Most of the dogs are aged between three and five years and are said to make gentle and lazy pets.

Ms Beumer added: “There is no comparison to the dog you see racing around the track to the dog going home with you, who is a real couch potato and an absolute softy. Greyhounds love children and therefore make great family pets. All they want is food, love and a nice bed.”
