MEMBERS of a Royal British Legion branch are undertaking a pilgrimage to Dunkirk to mark the death of a local war hero.

Buckhurst Hill British Legion members will be boarding a ship to France in May next year in memory of Cyril Nichols.

Cyril lived at Lugano, in Powell Road, Buckhurst Hill, when he signed up to join the army during World War II.

Despite being excused enlistment because of his job as the manager of a building business, Cyril volunteered in 1940 to set sail to Dunkirk in his yacht.

He and his two-man crew perished when their boat was sunk by a German dive-bomber and he became the first Buckhurst Hill casualty of the war.

The Buckhurst Hill British Legion is now looking for people to join them in the pilgrimage in honour of Cyril Nichols.

Anyone interested in setting sail should contact branch chairman Stephen Goddard on 020 8505 2570 or goddard93@ hotmail.co.uk.
