A LANDMARK pub has reopened after laying empty for months, much to the delight of drinkers who have welcomed the return of an important part of the local community.

The British Queen, in New Wanstead, has finally opened its doors today (Monday January 25) having last served thirsty punters more than six months ago.

Speculation surrounded the premises while it was shut but now it is finally back in business thanks to new landlady Annie McGirl.

Lee Jordan, 38, of New Wanstead, said: “We're all over the moon that it's reopened, especially after so long. It was hell while it was closed!

“It's always been such a good local pub, I was always down here after work and there were always people you knew in here because they all lived just round the corner or up the road. Its part of the community around here.

“Even if you came in and didn't know anyone, within about 10 minutes someone would, walk in or someone would ring you up, find out you were in the British Queen, and meet you down here.”

Siobhan Frecker, 46, also of New Wanstead, said: “We're so pleased that it's finally opened up again, because you do miss places like this when they're closed.

“It's great to have a pub that, living locally, you can just come up and meet up with everyone you know from the area for a few drinks.”

The pub initially re-opened last Monday but problems with some of the chillers forced it shut temporarily for a week, but now the establishment is open for good.

Ms McGirl said: “We're really looking forward to getting established in the area. Hopefully once we've been open for a few days and our new banner goes up, we'll drum up some support and word of mouth will get round.

“I want to make this a community pub for local people. I'm going to listen to the customers and find out what it is they want for their pub.”
