THE Labour prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) has been named as John Cryer, early reports suggest.

The ballots from party members were counted this afternoon, revealing Mr Cryer as the PPC after an eight-month wait for a shortlist.

Mr Cryer is the former MP for Hornchurch and lost his seat in 2005.

He is also a national political officer with union Unite.

If elected, he has pledged to “work tirelessly to keep Leyton and Wanstead Labour and to campaign on behalf of local people”.

His opponents, Conservative PPC Ed Northover and Lib Dem Farooq Qureshi, have already been campaigning in the area for months, leading to fears Labour could have lost considerable ground.

Mr Cryer has since set up a website, listing his priorities if he becomes MP for the constituency.
