WALTHAMSTOW School for Girls has been named as one of London's top schools in a new honours list.

It now appears in Ofsted's Internet school hall of fame, which catalogues England's successful schools and colleges.

Ofsted's chief inspector David Bell has revealed the Waltham Forest school to be one of 37 consistent high achievers in London.

The database names all of the schools that have received the watchdog's top accolade and been praised as particularly successful in at least one of the chief inspector's annual reports over the last ten years Rachel Macfarlane, head teacher of Walthamstow School for Girls, in Church Hill, said she was delighted the school's achievements had been highlighted in the honours list.

She said: "The school has for many years recorded very good GCSE results and good key stage 3 results and in our last Ofsted inspection in 2002, we were called an exceptional school.

"In a previous report we were also called outstanding. The school is something all our teachers, staff, pupils, governors and parents can be proud of."

The school has been named in the list after receiving top Ofsted reports for the year 2002 to 2003 and for the year 1996 to 1997.

Ms Macfarlane added: "Before I became head teacher in September last year I came and had a look round and what struck me was the sense of pride the students have in the school. Students really feel privileged and proud to be here and of what they have achieved.

"We have a large number of girls who come back to see us years after they left.

"They seem to have a real affinity with the school and the teachers. So much of our success is down to the teachers and staff."

Mr Bell said all the schools on the list should be proud of their achievements.

He added: "Our new Internet honours list stands as a testament to the very high quality of education provided in our best schools, sometimes against considerable odds. I congratulate them for what they have achieved."
