POLICE have warned that the number of bogus callers trying to trick their way into older people's homes has been rising again this week.
One weekend alone saw four separate incidents across Newham where conmen gained entry to pensioners' homes and stole cash or goods.
Police believe that there may have been many more incidents but the victims have yet to realise they have been burgled.
Most bogus callers pretend they are either from the water company or are there to check electricity meters. Older people can now set up a password with their utility companies to ensure the person knocking on the door is who they say they are.
Crime prevention officers have called on residents to demand to see identification if someone they do not know knocks on their door. Anyone with information on conmen operating in the area should call police on 8534 1212.
