RECYCLING facilities in Redbridge have been boosted by a Government grant of almost £197,000.

Redbridge is set to receive the grant as part of the Government's package of measures to help divert waste from landfill and encourage recycling without putting additional pressure on council tax.

The injection of £196,991 was recently announced by Environment Minister Elliot Morley after the publication of the Local Government Finance settlement.

The measures are designed to give councils such as Redbridge greater flexibility in deciding how best to meet tough national and European waste management targets, whilst working to tight budgets and efficiency standards.

Mr Morley said: "We need to cut the amount of waste we dump in the ground and increase recycling and re-use of materials.

"The role of local authorities in reducing waste and reducing landfill is vital. The package will give local authorities greater flexibility to tackle the challenges without compromising the Government's commitment to increase recycling and divert more biodegradable municipal waste from landfill."
