MOTORISTS and pedestrians using Charlie Brown's roundabout will soon have to keep their eyes open for new road signs.

Proposals to increase pedestrian safety at the roundabout include installing surface-level crossing points on all arms of the junction.

As well as an equestrian push button crossing along the Southend Road, footpaths will be widened and there will be a number of shared footways/cycleways in the area.

In order to improve traffic flows, the carriageway is set to be widened both at the mouth of the roundabout in Chigwell Road, part of the A406 eastbound, and the A406 slip road.

Minor kerb re-alignments on the roundabout have been proposed in order to provide an additional lane.

The proposals have been set out by Transport for London following calls from Redbridge Area 2 committee members to improve safety at the busy junction.

Transport for London is currently in negotiation with the council property services department to buy a patch of council-owned land on the south west corner of the roundabout. The council is also undergoing talks regarding compensation for any loss of income from this site.

The programme of works is due to get underway at the beginning of April and is expected to take around 18 months to complete.
