LITTLE gymnasts can burn off some energy and learn the skills that could set them up as Olympic champions of the future at a new toddlers club.

Children aged from babies to five can learn basic and fun gymnastics from professional, qualified coaches.

The new sessions are being run at the Winchester Road Memorial Hall in Highams Park.

Jane Tear and Diane Ridley formerly taught toddler gymnastics in Redbridge, but when the Pulteney Road gym closed down they were forced to relocate.

Mrs Tear said: "This is the only club of its kind that I know of in Waltham Forest. In our previous club the children got so much from the sessions.

"It keeps them flexible, gives them a chance to burn off some energy and most importantly it's lots of fun."

The club has plenty of soft play materials and its own junior beam.

Children learn at their own pace, and progress to basic moves such as forward rolls and cartwheels.

Parents are also encouraged to join in the fun.

The youngest baby currently attending sessions with its mother is just nine months old.

Classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with parent and toddler sessions at 10am, and under-fives sessions at 11am, 1pm, and 2pm.

Mrs Tear said: "The Government is telling people a lot about the child obesity problem and that children need more exercise. This is an enjoyable way for them to get active.

"The 2012 Olympics aren't that far away.

"Who knows, this may encourage a few budding Olga Korbuts."
