A POPULAR café will learn whether an application to convert its premises has been granted by the council – a year after the business opened.

The branch of Belgique in Cambridge Park, Wanstead, has been open since early 2009, but has yet to secure permission from the council to change the use of its premises from its former life as a NHS renal unit to a café.

The company has previous gotten into hot water with the council after they erected a trellis fence along one side of an outdoor seating area, but this was later removed after the council intervened.

Council officers have recommended that the committee grant the application, saying that there there has been no detrimental effect on the area and that the building had been vacant for some time before the café opened.

The Belgian-themed café and patisserie chain has other branches in Redbridge, in Woodford Green, South Woodford, as well as in Chingford and Epping.
