A LEYTON school has been named School of the Year in a national awards scheme.

Noor Ul Islam Primary School, in Dawlish Road, was given the accolade by the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS).

The awards were launched this year and recognise excellence in Muslim schools. Judges considered schools which demonstrated outstanding and consistent standards, or significant improvement in standards.

The also took into account factors including exam results, work done to develop spirituality and community links.

As well as the title, the school was awarded £1000, a netbook and a trophy.

Headteacher Rookshana Adam collected the award at the AMS annual conference in Leicester.

She said: "We thank the staff, pupils, parents and governors for all their hard work and pray that the school continues to help improve the education of our children."
