CHALLENGING gardening conditions this year failed to stop a bumper crop of entrants showing at an annual horticultural show.

In addition to cut flowers and pot plants, Buckhurst Hill Horticultural Society's Summer Show this year also included cookery entries as well as a selection of paintings and quilts.

The show, as always, took place at the Centenary Hall of St John's Church, in Buckhurst Hill High Road and this year's trophy winners were Joanne Flindall, Joan Piggott, Alan Gillingwater, Marcia Levan-Harris, Graham Bailey, and Peter and Jacqueline Wilkins.

In the Junior section Tilly Devison's stone decorated as a cat was a popular winner and Oliver Halladey's picture of a gardener was much admired as was Amber Compton's scarecrow.

Horticultural society chairman Maureen Briggs said she was pleased to see so many visitors on such a hot afternoon and congratulated all the exhibitors on the high standard of their entries.

The society's Autumn Show will take place at the Centenary Hall on Saturday, September 11. Call 020 8504 3238 for details.
