A NEW department aimed at addressing dissatisfaction with council services could be created under sweeping changes at the town hall.

Functions such as Waltham Forest Direct, complaints and service improvement will be brought together under a service known as Residents First, it has been proposed.

A new assistant director will be responsible for the service, with the aim of improving levels of satisfaction with council services, which are currently below the London average.

The proposal is part of a shake-up prompted by a squeeze on public spending, which will see council spending cut by at least £30 million over the next three years.

Cabinet is set to discuss proposals on Tuesday for changes to management structures across most departments, as well as 50 per cent budgetary cuts to support services such as communications and diversity.

The first wave of changes are set to result in the loss of 80 jobs, although unions say the figure could be as high as 100.

The authority has promised to consult with staff and unions over the changes.

Residents First is aimed at involving residents in decision making and providing an efficient response to complaints, as well as improving services and providing value for money.
