A HERITAGE organisation is inviting people to a discussion in Waltham Forest later this month to reminisce about the history of the Olympic site.

Eastside Community Heritage will hold the session at the Vestry House Museum in Vestry Road, Walthamstow, where the borough's residents can recall memories of the Olympic Park site in Stratford.

The location has a long commercial history, according to Judith Garfield, the organisation's executive director, and has been home to a number of independent stores.

She is hoping people will bring along photographs of what the land looked like before it was earmarked for the London 2012 Olympics, which could be used in the organisation's future projects.

The 44-year-old, whose home overlooks the park, said: “I've seen a huge amount of change to the site over the years that I have lived here.

“I remember when it was the site for a fridge-mountain, where people dumped their old fridges.

“I am looking for people to come along with pictures showing some of the industries that were there before it became the Olympic site.

“Hopefully some people will be able to show us what it was like when it had houses on it before the war, which were bombed in the Blitz.

“As we're talking about living memories, hopefully we'll get a glimpse of its history as far back as the war itself.

"The site has a long history, and is a worthy site for the Olympic Games. I think it will be very beneficial to the rejuvenation of the surrounding boroughs."

The event will be held on Wednesday, September 29 from 2pm to 4pm.
