AGE Concern is appealing for quick-fingered knitters to help make mini bobble hats in the next three weeks.

The Waltham Forest branch is making the hats for The Big Knit 2010.

The mini hats will sit on top of smoothie drinks sold in Sainsbury's supermarkets. For each smoothie sold 25p will go to the charity to help fund winter warmth projects.

They need to knit 8,000 hats by October 1 and are looking for help from people of all ages.

Sheena Dunbar, chief officer at Age Concern Waltham Forest, said: “We need everyone’s help to make sure we raise as much money as possible to help make older people warm this winter. The more hats people knit for Age Concern Waltham Forest, the more money we will raise to help local people.”

As an added incentive, two £500 prizes are being offered to the Age UK or Age Concern branch which knits the most hats.

The money will be used locally to help provide hot meals, electric blankets and information and advice on keeping well in the winter.

Emma Hines from innocent drinks said: “The Big Knit is a really good way of using your knitting skills to help local people in later life keep warm this winter. Last year was a huge success with knitters up and down the country getting involved to make 444,025 little woolly hats and veg pots. We want to make this year even bigger and look forward to working with Age UK.”

Knitters can contact Age Concern Waltham Forest to get a simple hat pattern and for those who don’t fancy making a hat, wool and needles can be donated to Age Concern Waltham Forest.
