THE first-ever Walthamstow International Film Festival has been hailed as a great success by organisers.

The event, which ran parallel to the E17 Art Trail over the last week, concluded yesterday with an award ceremony.

Winner of the overall Audience Prize - as voted for by visitors to the festival - was the short film 'Date' by Walthamstow director Sawan Nair.

Other commended winners were 'Los Gritones' by Roberto Pérez Toledo, 'Capicua' by Roger Villarroya and 'A Film About Poo' by Leyton musicians Billy Payne and Tom Snow.

Organiser Liza Fletcher said: "We're really pleased with how it went. We had entries from around the world and it was very popular - it was a great success.

"We were over-awed by the quality and diversity of everything that came in.

"Even things like 'A Film About Poo' - it sounds disgusting but it was actually very beautiful.

"We'd very much like to make this an annual thing. It was just fantastic."

Mrs Fletcher said there had been so much interest from residents that organisers have decided to establish a cinema club which will run a series of film workshops later this autumn.
