TRADERS in Highams Park have got together to help small businesses prepare for the arrival of Tesco.
The partnership aims to attract new customers to the area by cleaning up the environment.
The move, which has been bakced by local councillors, was prompted by fears that the impending arrival of Tesco in Highams Park would put small traders out of business.
Cllr Darshan Sunger said: "All the local shopkeepers will be represented.
"It is about what they want to do and how we can help.
"It will take some of the pressure off the local businesses.
"I am a businessman, so I can understand what they are going through.
"There was graffiti above the shops. We have had a lot of that cleaned up. It looks more welcoming now.
"We have been fighting to allow people to park for free for 20 minutes near the shops.
"We are working with the shop keepers and small business owners."
It is hoped 50 firms will sign up to the partnership.
Nicky Cooper, from the County Arms pub, in Hale End Road, is one of those getting involved.
She said: "I work closely with the police and council anyway, but I think this is a great idea. It's a good way for business people to get things done.
"The area has needed a good tidy up.
"A lot of shops and businesses will suffer when Tesco comes so anything to help is good."
