A NEW swimming pool at a school has been named after a stalwart and much-loved former member of staff.

The Race Pool, at West Hatch High School is named in tribute to former science teacher Dave Race, who has chalked up a 50 year relationship with the Chigwell school.

Dave, 78, joined West Hatch in 1960 as a teacher and later became head of year and a member of the School Leadership Team.

He retired in 1988 but continued to support his old employer by organising out of hours sports events, maintaining the old swimming pool and earning the nickname Mr West Hatch for his hard work.

Assistant headteacher John Cowen said: “Many organizations can’t operate without having somebody completely committed to the school, who will regularly go beyond the call of duty. Dave Race is that man. Dave has been a true West Hatch advocate and deserves to have our new pool named after him.”

West Hatch's former swimming pool was 50 years old and closed last term.

The Race Pool has completely modern facilities and will play a larger role in the community.

As well as school lessons, it will be available for use for non-curricular activities and will be open to nearby special school St John's, in Turpins Lane, Woodford Green.

The Race Pool will be formally opened on Monday by headteacher Frances Howarth and paralympic swimmer Lauren Smith.

Mrs Howarth said: “It is a welcomed addition to West Hatch’s sporting facilities, and one that will be a great asset for years to come.”
