PUPILS enjoyed a taste of the 1940s as an event was held to coincide with Remembrance Day.

Children at Woodbridge High School in Woodford Green sampled spam fritters, Lord Woolton Pie - a vegetable pie that was popular during World War Two, corned beef hash and honey cake.

The themed menu was a big hit with pupils according to the school's deputy headteacher Jeremy Clifton.

He said: "It went really well and the kids tucked into everything.

"The recipes used were actually from the 1940s and it was quite interesting as it made the children think about how food was stored in tins and not always in fridges and freezers."

Year 11 pupil Alexandra Wilson, the school's deputy head girl, said: "The honey cake was delicious.

"Why did they stop serving it after the '40s?"

Deputy head boy Elliot Pearce added: "It was a change to what we would normally have, but a good change.

"It was nice to have an insight into how people ate 70 years ago."

Mr Clifton said today's event was part of National School Meals Week which takes place across the country and is designed to promote school meals to pupils.

He said the school also held a two-minute silence and some pupils studying music played the Last Post.
