HARRY Cohen MP is pressing for an immediate ceasefire to all military action in Lebanon.

He told the Leyton and Wanstead Labour Party's General Committee: "The kidnap and killing of Israeli soldiers and the rockets fired into Israel by Hezbollah is wrong and must end immediately.

"But Israel's response in killing innocent civilians, including many children, devastating Lebanon's infrastructure, damaging its ability to function as a country, destroying the UN post, killing international observers and attacking humanitarian aid efforts are massively disproportionate."

Mr Cohen has demanded the Prime Minister does not allow widening of the conflict to Syria and Iran, or with any UK involvement.

He called for face-to-face negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, as well as Hezbollah, to take place following a ceasefire.

The local MP has written to Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett protesting the use of air base facilities in the UK to transport bombs and other weaponry from the United States to Israel.

He said: "The UK's traditional position of not arming combatants in on-going conflicts is being compromised. It also may make some people think the UK is directly on the side of Israel and so a target in ongoing warfare, albeit via terrorism."

Mr Cohen has demanded an end to the UK facilitating this bomb transportation.
