A SHARP increase in burglaries in Waltham Forest is causing concern.
Police say there has been a spike in the number of break-ins in recent weeks, but have not released any figures or information about where the burglaries are taking place.
However, the latest published figures show there has been an increase in the number of reported burglaries in the borough year-on-year.
The data also shows a rise in recent months, with 213 incidents in both October and November - an average of seven every day - compared to 186 in September.
Cann Hall ward in Leytonstone was the worst affected, with 19 reported break-ins in October, followed by Wood Street in Walthamstow, Highams Park and Chingford Green.
A police spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately, we are experiencing a high level of burglaries in the borough.
"We would like to reinforce previous messages regarding preventing your home becoming a target.
"Please remember to lock your PVC door from the inside using your key. Pulling the handle up does not fully engage the locking mechanism.
"All keys should then be taken away from the area of the door so that they are not on show, however it is imperative that you can find the keys should you need them in an emergency such as a fire.
"Around 40 per cent of burglaries occur at night so please be vigilant and ensure that you have taken all measures to secure your home.
"The items most regularly stolen are laptops, mobile phones and cash.
"On some occasions, vehicles are also being stolen so please ensure your car keys are also kept secure."
"Keep an eye on your neighbours' property - if they have gone away , push leaflets and letters through the letterbox. We take burglary very seriously and want to catch those responsible.
"We would also like to identify where and who is handling this stolen property. If you have any information about stolen goods, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team."
