MORE than 100 worried parents have signed a petition demanding the council introduce parking restrictions on a section of busy road where children are encouraged to cross.

The council has painted yellow footprints and a stop look and listen sign on the pavement on Inmans Row at the junction with Monkhams Lane in Woodford Green.

But while they have also put in a raised platform in the road to slow cars down, there are no restrictions in place during the school run to stop people from parking on or either side of the platform.

Kathy Hart, 46, of Monkhams Drive, walks her 10-year-old daughter Lauren to school at Wells Primary School and says the road is dangerous.

She has collected more than 100 signatures on a petition which she will present to the council next month.

She explained: “No child can see past cars parked on the platform.

“And no approaching car would ever see a child trying to cross the road.

“It is only a matter of time before we have a serious accident or fatality.

“I have approached people who park there, but they just say ‘’I’m not doing anything illegal.’”

Mrs Hart says she has contacted the council asking for restrictions to be put in place between 8am and 9am and 3pm and 4pm.

But she added: “They told me they can’t do anything about it.

“This area in my opinion has become a laughing stock, a joke, a pointless exercise by the council and a massive waste of tax payer’s money”

Bollards have been installed to stop motorists parking on the pavement, but parents say this has encouraged motorists to park even further out in the road.

Sarah Poulter-Patel, 36, of Princes Avenue, has three children at nearby St Anthony’s School.

She also has a baby and says getting across the road with a pram is dangerous.

She added: “You have to step into the road, when you’ve got a pram that’s particularly dangerous.

“Someone will get killed there unless something is done.

“What makes it worse, is that children think it’s a safe place to cross because of the signs on the pavement.

“But it’s not. I’d prefer to see a zebra crossing and a lollipop lady, but if we can’t have that, let’s at least have some parking restrictions.”

The Guardian has asked Redbridge Council to comment on the situation.
