A CHARITY believes older people should be encouraged to move into smaller homes as part of measures to tackle a national shortage of housing.

The Guardian asked the people of Chingford whether they support the idea.

Giovanni Criscioni, 52, Station Road

"If you have older people living in a house where there are a lot of rooms then they should be encouraged to move into something smaller and give it to people who need it."

Steven Wiseman, 50, Station Road

"I dont think elderly people should be told where to live.

It is not fair because it is their home which they have paid for."

Lisa Wood, 39, Whitehall Gardens

"If it is their own property why should they move out, when they have worked all all their lives to pay for it?"

Kerry Roper, 29, Woodland Road

"It is their home and they have a right to live there whether it is council or provate.

Steve Rungasamy, 38, Mountview Road

"Who will buy these houses when people are already struggling to get on the property ladder?

It seems unfair to suggest that older people should be pushed around like this."

Gillian Ryan, 35, Old Church Road

"If you have bought and paid for your house the only person who should be making the decision on whether to leave is you."
