AN unusual twist on two of Britain's favourite foods is flying off the shelves after being created in a Walthamstow restaurant.

Bacon Jam was devised when Eat 17 owner Chris O’Connor began experimenting with a relish to serve with burgers at his restaurant in Orford Road.

Customers were so taken with the quirky product that they begun to request jars for themselves and the product was put on sale at the Spar independent supermarket next door.

The jam really took off when it featured on ITV’s Jonathan Ross show and is now being sold at 150 stores around the country.

Spar co-owner James Brundle said: “It’s fantastic and absolutely crazy how it has taken off.

“People around Walthamstow come in just to buy a jar of it. I think people like it because you can dip it, have it on bread, spread it on your burgers, put it in a cheese sandwich, it goes with everything.

“Obviously this is all new to us so although we do have plans to create more products, we want to make sure it is right. Right now we’re just so busy making enough of it to satisfy demand.”
