A 19-year-old youth suffered facial injuries when he was punched in the face by three men during a seemingly unprovoked attack.
It happened in Griggs Road at the junction with Essex Road in Leyton at 3.30pm on Friday March 9.
Police say they have been unable to establish a possible motive for the assault.
A Met spokesman said: "It is believed that the victim was walking with a friend when they were approached by the suspect. The suspect then suddenly started attacking the victim. The suspect was then joined by two other males who continued to attack him and then made off towards Epsom Road."
An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail until April pending further enquiries.
The attack happened near Leyton Sixth Form College in Essex Road and police believe some students may have witnessed it.
Those with information are urged to contact DC Jane Cochrane on 0203 276 0970. To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
