THE fountain at Waltham Forest town hall is still pumping out water - despite council assurances it would be turned off in the wake of London's hosepipe ban.

Water displays across London, such as at Trafalgar Square, have been turned off due to the drought in south east England caused by below average rainfall in successive months.

Thames Water says it is concerned about supplies running low after the driest two years since records began.

A ban on hosepipe use was introduced in the capital last Thursday (April 5).

The council told the Guardian yesterday that the fountain was due to be turned off that day (Tuesday April 10), however it is still in operation today.

A spokesman said the authority needed to get a contractor to do it due to repair works being carried out in the basement of the building, in Forest Road, Walthamstow.
