A CHILDREN’S allotment has been given a prestigious award.

The Growing Kids Community Allotment, in Roding Lane North, Woodford Green will fly the prestigious Green Flag above its vegetable patches after picking up the prize.

The Green Flag award is given to spaces which are deemed to be well-managed and high quality.

Judges look at cleanliness, environmental sustainability, health and safety conservation-as well as the suitability of the features and facilities of each space for the community that it serves.

The Growing Kids allotment was set up by Stephanie O’Leary, 50, of Cairns Avenue, Woodford Green.

As well as giving children the chance to grow their own food, the project also promotes healthy eating and a wide range of fun activities.

Mrs O’Leary said: “The allotment has been a big hit and is very well used.

“I’m really proud of it and it’s an honour to get this award.”

Five Redbridge parks have also been given Green Flags.

They are

• Elmhurst Gardens, South Woodford.
• Valentines Park, Ilford.
• South Park, Ilford.
• Goodmayes Park, Goodmayes.
• Ilford War Memorial Gardens, Ilford.
