MP John Cryer has expressed his delight that a plan to break up his constituency is in doubt.

The Leyton & Wanstead constituency would have been broken up under proposals to reduce the number of MPs.

But the Liberal Democrats have now dropped their support for the plan after their Conservative coalition partners decided to ditch House of Lords reform. This has put the plan in doubt, but prime minister David Cameron has vowed to press ahead with the boundary reform.

Mr Cryer said: "If this really is dead in the water then that’s fine by me.

"Leyton and Wanstead is a great constituency to represent and I hope to continue to do that in the future.

"The whole process was a piece of gerrymandering designed to give the Conservatives an inbuilt advantage at the next election."

Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith also criticised the proposal, which would have seen Chingford split from Woodford Green and joined with the Labour stronghold of Edmonton.
