FUNDRAISERS who have made half a million pounds for a charity since they set up their group honoured their longest-serving member.

Marjorie Chapman, 92, who was one of the founders of the Theydon Bois and District Friends of Cancer Research UK 40 years ago, was given a certificate of appreciation by the charity.

Darren Couchman, Cancer Research UK’s north Essex area volunteer manager, said: “It’s such a privilege to work with this local group.

“Their passion and dedication is clear to see. They all give up many hours of their free time to support the charity and for this we are very grateful.”

Mrs Chapman started organising fundraising events for the charity, than named the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, from a friend’s living room in 1972, after two people in the village were diagnosed with the disease.

The first jumble sale she and her committee organised raised £90, but four decades down the line the group has raised £500,000.

A plaque paying tribute to the group will be installed at one of the charity’s research laboratories.
