PEOPLE fled as a blaze ripped through flats.
Emergency services were called to properties above a parade of shops in Wood Street, Walthamstow, at at 4.30am this morning.
Eight adults were rescued from inside the flats and another man was rescued from the second floor by firefighters using ladders.
Another 14 people, including a baby and a child, escaped the fire before the firefighters arrived.
Four people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Surrounding roads were closed while firefighters tackled the blaze.
The fire damaged part of the first and second floors of the flats.
Waltham Forest Council is helping to find temporary accomodation for those made homeless.
The blaze was under control by 6.15am.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
