DATA from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests people who have the new UK Covid-19 variant are more likely to suffer from a cough, fatigue, sore throat and muscle pain.

In a group of around 3,500 people with the new variant, 35% had a cough and 32% complained of fatigue, with 25% suffering from muscle pains, whereas 21.8% had a sore throat.

These percentages represent a rise compared with the ONS' data on the old variant, based on 2,500 people.

In this study, 28% of people had a cough, 29% said they were fatigued, muscle pains were found in 21% and 19% complained of a sore throat.

This analysis from ONS looked at the symptoms reported by people up to a week before testing positive for the new variant, compared to those testing positive for the old variant.

New Covid variants from South Africa and Brazil have also been detected in the UK.
