Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens hopes his new look side can build on their hard-earned point as they drew 0-0 away to Stockport in League One.

Orient fielded several new players that were signed during the January transfer window, and they made things tough for Hatters who are challenging for promotion.

After the game Wellens was encouraged by the performance and feels that this group of players can now gel well together and progress as the season goes on.

Wellens said: “I thought we started the game really well. In terms of counter attacks there were good moments. I think Ollie O’Neil had the best chance of the first half. We then had a 20-minute spell where did not find the first half.”

“We were pretty solid when we had to be in the box. We put our bodies on the line. We blocked a lot of shots from 30 yards. Our goalkeeper didn’t have much to do in terms of saves during the match.”

“Stockport is a good outfit. A strong team doing well in the league. Very consistent from last year. Not to many changes as far as players. So, a good point and we need to build on this now. “

“We have not had a settle team all year. New singings have come in; we get a good result and injuries come along. And that has been the way all season. So, it has been tough bur I have been really heartened. “

“So, I think things look bright. And I think we will get better. We will get fit and better. You have a feel for a group of players, and I feel good this group of players. I did ‘not feel it at the start if the season. Mayb it was me.”

He also singled out praise for new signing William Forrester. The defender joined the O’s from Bolton in January for an undisclosed fee.

Wellens added: “Will (Forrester) was outstanding. He was calm and commanding. That is down to experience. I have known him for a long time, and we have worked together before. He now needs a home. He will be important player for us over the next few years.”

A draw for Leyton Orient means they now sit in 18th in League One.
