Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens said he was pleased with his side’s ‘physical’ performance as they defeated fellow relegation strugglers Northampton Town 2-1 away in League One.
The O’s took an early lead in the first half through top scorer Dom Ballard and scored a second just after the break with a goal from James Morris. Northampton Town pulled one back, but Orient held on to claim a vital three points.
Victory meant Orient picked up their first win in five. After the game Wellens expressed his delight with his team’s performance and how well they concentrated during the match.
Wellens said: “In parts in the first half, we were the more dominate team. We could have scored a few more. As soon as we went 2-0 up there think the game would be comfortable. But give them credit. They put us under more pressure.”
“Long throws, set place, every time their keeper gets it, they kick up higher up, so it is difficult to clear. But when you are in the spot that we are in you need desire and sprit and I thought we showed that today.”
“We know we got good attacking threat, but we are still in development as far finding the first pass, more combinations as far relaxing with the ball.”
Wellens was also impressed with how Orient dealt with Northampton Town’s strengths, especially with set pieces.
Wellens added: “When you come here you got to well to defend set plays. I was worried about set plays and crosses. But we matched them up with physical presence.”
“We have signed a few lads in January and had to get them up to speed. Northampton are a good team with players full of Championship experience. But we dealt with it well. Today we did not make any mistakes.”
“I can’t question the players attuite today. I just think that sometimes we just have to be a little bit smart.”
Victory for Orient means they have climbed out of the relegation zone but remain in trouble. Next they play Barnsley at home.
