Ahead of World Book Day, bestselling author Dan Freedman delivered a workshop to Leyton Orients’ U11 and U12 squads to discuss his career as an author of the hugely popular series 'Jamie Johnson', and his journey to success.
The author initially discussed his aspirations to be a professional footballer, before trying to find another route into the game.
Freedman asked the young academy groups about what opportunities there could be to get into the sport, and he received a variety of answers. This prompted him to share his latest publication '50 Ways Into Football', which he co-wrote with sports lawyer, Daniel Geey. This book highlights all the different ways young people can aim for a career in football without being a player.
Freedman continued to explain his journey from starting as an intern, to quickly progressing with his career and becoming Managing Editor for The Football Association - the first ever in-house journalist to be embedded with the England Team, lasting seven years. He travelled the world and attended multiple international tournaments. He was also part of the official delegations to meet Queen Elizabeth II, two Prime Ministers and Nelson Mandela.
Despite being recognised as an author, Freedman continues to work closely with the Premier League to try and make reading and writing engaging for young people. However, it was the stories he was getting from observing and interviewing players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Steve Gerrard and David Beckham which inspired the 'Jamie Johnson' series.
Head of Academy Player Care, Christian Davies, said: "The boys were completely captivated throughout and, for the last ten minutes, Dan answered their questions. We could have been there for a lot longer and Dan did his very best to answer as many as he could in the time he had with us.
"It was a terrific workshop and one I am hoping our young players took plenty from. They made me extremely proud how they behaved and showed the utmost respect to our visitor. I am hoping that this session will allow them to consider 'go for your goals' - a phrase that is often to referred to in the 'Jamie Johnson' series.
"Before Dan left, he gave each player a copy of his book, 'Born to Play'. He even stayed behind to sign their copies, which ended the evening perfectly."
