Waltham Abbey netted four goals to rack up their biggest win of the season on Tuesday night.

But the Abbots still need a miracle to avoid relegation out of the Ryman Premier division.

Captain James Elmes hit two from the penalty spot, and then Joe Eubel and Xaniel Doku scored in the final ten minutes to beat relegation strugglers Bognor Regus Town 4-1, at Capershotts.

Boss Glen Alzapiedi said: "We started well and they responded, so it was quite an even game.

"But I thought we were the stronger side in the seoncd half and we were also the more experienced side on the night.

"Getting that second penalty has ultimately helped us push on for a much needed win.

"Bognor are a good footballing side. The problem is having the strength and experience to win games.

"We needed to get tight on their centre-forward and once we did that, I felt we looked more dangerous".

But Abbey can now be saved from a return to division one north only by a cut in the number of relegation places from four down to two.

That will happen if under-threat clubs in neighbouring divisions drop out of the competition.

Additionally, Abbey must win the last of their season against Canvey Island on Saturday, and the four teams directly above them in the table must all lose their remaining games.

Afterwards, Abbey boss Glen Alzapiedi said: “We don't want to finish bottom of the league.

“If we finish second or third last, we will feel as though we've done our bit, as we've had so much against us this season, in terms of the finances and size of the support compared to our opponents.

“We've the potential to get 44 points and it's a great achievement for us to get that many.

“The fact we've taken it to the last day, and now can hopefully finish third bottom, would be a massive achievement”.

But Abbey are relegated, as things stand in the Ryman Premier division.

Alzapiedi said he wants to stay as boss in order to mastermind a promotion campaign next season.

He added that he expects a tough test when mid-table Canvey Island visit Capershotts on Saturday.

“Canvey can come here and play with nothing to worry about. I know their manager and they're a passing side, so I won't be expecting a comfortable game
