Shaun Batt scored a hat-trick as Leyton Orient won 3-1 at Gillingham in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The former Millwall forward opened his account from the penalty spot after Romain Vincelot was fouled in the area. Batt doubled the O's lead just before the break as the clinical visitors punished Martin Allen's side.

Orient killed off the match on the hour mark when Batt raced away and tucked the ball home for his third of the evening. The Gills replied through a Bradley Dack header but it was no more than a consolation.

It was smooth progress for Russell Slade's side who are looking to go one better than last season after falling to defeat in the area final of the competition.

The League One leaders made four changes to the side which won at Colchester United on Saturday. Bournemouth striker Jayden Stockley made his debut, following his loan move, alongside Batt with Kevin Lisbie and David Mooney dropping out.

Marvin Bartley and Johnny Gorman also came into the midfield with Dean Cox and Scott Cuthbert starting on the bench.

It was a quiet start to the cup tie with the hosts edging the opening 15 minutes without creating a clear-cut chance.

Michael Harriman almost created an opening midway through the half but his pass into the penalty area was just too far in front of Cody McDonald.

The first significant moment of the match came after 26 minutes when the visitors were awarded a penalty after McDonald tripped Vincelot. Batt stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Orient the lead.

The hosts had a decent opportunity through McDonald but his strike was brilliantly blocked by captain Nathan Clarke.

McDonald had another chance seconds later but he drilled his shot narrowly past Jamie Jones' post.

Antonio German fired in an effort late in the half but it was too close to Jones who comfortably saved the ball.

The O's doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time to take a flattering lead into the break. Moses Odubajo sent in the cross and Batt was in the right place to finish from close range.

Batt completed his hat-trick when debutant Stockley released him and the powerful striker raced away before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

The super hero Batt was given a standing ovation by the away fans after being replaced by Mooney.

Gillingham got on the scoresheet with just over 20 minutes left when Dack nodded home from close range.

The O's had few other scares during the closing stages as they booked their place in Saturday's second round draw.
