Jay Simpson insists he is happy to stay at the club after becoming the first Orient player to score 20 goals in a season for 38 years.

The O’s striker has been a huge success this season and his brace at Stevenage on Saturday secured the milestone in only his 25th league appearance of the campaign.

Simpson’s future will be the subject of discussion this month with clubs from higher divisions likely to be linked with a move for the country’s top scorer.

But the 27-year-old insists he is enjoying his football at Brisbane Road.

Simpson said: “The gaffer, (Andy) Hessanthaler and Nuge (Kevin Nugent) have all made it a really enjoyable environment to come into. Every day I love coming into training.

“It’s like being a kid again when you come in and you can really enjoy the sessions. They put on a lot of finishing sessions for the forwards and let me go on the pitch with a freedom which I appreciate, so it’s nice to be able to score the goals and return the favour.”

The former Arsenal forward was asked about his future after Saturday’s game but insists he will just focus on trying to help Orient achieve success.

Simpson said: “I haven’t spoken to anyone or heard anything about anyone coming in for me or anything like that.

“Obviously the window’s open but I’ve gone out, just kept my head down and done what’s been asked of me. I’ll continue to do that.”

Some fans called for head coach Ian Hendon to be sacked after another game without victory but Simpson believes the boss deserves support.

The striker said: “It’s quite disappointing when you get the fans calling for the manager’s head because I really enjoy playing for him and know the boys enjoy coming into training and working with him and Hessy.

“I understand the frustrations of the fans because of the goals we are conceding but it is something we’re actually working on.”

He continued: “I know they don’t see what we do in training every day but I think they should get behind the gaffer because as we experienced last season it was a very odd year with (Fabio) Liverani involved.

“I promise you this year is a thousand times better than it was last year.”
