Alex Lawless said it was “great to be playing” after starting Leyton Orient’s 0-0 draw away at Barnet on Saturday.

The midfielder, who filled in at right-wingback after injuries to Sam Ling and Jamie Turley, was making his first league appearance since the draw at Hartlepool on February 9 and his first league start since the defeat at Ebbsfleet United on January 19.

Speaking to the club’s website after the game, Lawless said: “It’s great to be playing to be honest, and to help the lads out. It’s something I’ve been chomping at the bit to do and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Something every player wants to do is play but it’s a team game, it’s not about me.

“I haven’t played there [right-wingback] for a while but it’s not that unfamiliar to me in terms of having played there before, just not recently. It was something I enjoyed when I did play there so it was just a case of getting a few of the rusty bits out and then getting on with it.”

Orient head coach Justin Edinburgh had said after the game that he felt it was a point earned against an in-form Barnet side, and that feeling was reciprocated by Lawless.

He said: “We’ve just discussed that now and that’s what we’ve got to focus on. Obviously we want three points every week and you’ve got to have that mentality but we appreciate some of the results that they’ve had recently and we definitely have to see it as a point gained in the promotion push.

“Towards the end we were all up thinking we’d won it and we obviously had [James] Dayton’s penalty shout as well. There were a few other instances as well that were better than a 0-0 but it’s a point gained and we’re going to work on getting our goals in the next game.

“Normally I’m quite careful when things might happen, like checking for the linesman, but it was just that moment in time where you thought ‘this is it’ but it wasn’t to be and I’m sure we’ll get our fair share of more luck.”
