Beal High School’s Year 7 cricket team upset the odds to be crowned Redbridge Cup champions after beating Mayfield by 23 runs.

Starting the match as underdogs after losing to the same opposition just weeks earlier, Beal produced a fine team display to clinch the trophy.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Beal’s openers Nikhil Sharma (45) and captain Haadi Syed (38) put on a solid partnership of 91 en route to an overall total of 104 from the 20 overs.

Yajan Rajanthakumaraswamy and Syed opened the bowling and managed to get the breakthrough when the former’s short ball produced a big hit which was snaffled by Sharma. Wickets then tumbled in quick succession as Mayfield struggled to cope with the bowling of Aryan Keerthy, who claimed four scalps, including three in one over.

There were also two wickets for man-of-the-match Sharma and one for Syed as Mayfield were restricted to 81.
