TOP scorer Harry Elmes tucked away Waltham Abbey's only goal, as they drew against second-from-bottom Great Wakering Rovers.

The Abbotts have not won in the league since October 14, but skipper Lee White remains optimistic about their season.

White (pictured) said: "Better a point than a loss away from home. We're just not converting our chances at the moment.

"We have been playing well in recent games and creating a lot of chances.

"Sometimes teams have told us, I can't believe you didn't win that,' but it's goals that count in this game and we're not tucking them away. But I have a funny feeling that we are going to net about eight in one match soon and then people will start to notice us.

"We're not playing badly and once the goals start going in, we will begin to move back up the table."

Abbey started well on Saturday, with Elmes rattling the bar within the first ten minutes, but they failed to capitalise on their advantage, allowing Rovers to gain control of the game to go into the break leading 1-0.

The visitors came out revitalised in the second half but found themselves down to ten men after their defender reacted badly to poor tackle.

The referee evened up the numbers before the end however, and Elmes was on hand from a long kick up field to win the race for the ball against the home goalkeeper and score into an empty goal.

White said: "It wasn't really a very eventful game.

"We struggled to deal with their formation in the first half and didn't take our chances. There weren't really a lot of talking points."

Abbotts, who are in 16th place, entertain league-leaders AFC Hornchurch at Capershotts on Saturday.
