ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger had a last minute bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso rejected last night, according to media reports.

Wenger has been in the market for another midfielder throughout the summer after the departures of Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb and Gilberto Silva. And despite signing Samir Nasri, Amaury Bischoff and Aaron Ramsey, Wenger still seemed desperate to sign at least one more on the last day of the transfer window.

The north Londoners had a reported £12 million bid rejected for the Spaniard last month and came in with an improved offer of £14 million also rejected from the Merseysiders yesterday, with Rafa Benitez reportedly wanting to keep a stable squad at Anfield.

It was believed that Wenger felt that Alonso would be the perfect partner to Cesc Fabregas, with the Spaniard revealing his desire to play alongside fellow countryman last month. A deal seemed imminent, however, it seems that Wenger just couldn't do enough to get the 26-year-old to the Emirates.

And with the transfer window know firmly closed, it seems that Wenger may be forced into the loan market to solve his midfielder crisis, with former Gunners legend Patrick Viera still a reported target.
