ESSEX are favourites to sign Matthew Walker whose release at the end of the season was announced by Kent on Saturday.

It is understood that the left-hander has agreed a deal that would see him move to Chelmsford for next summer on a three-year deal.

Coach Paul Grayson admitted that he was hopeful of confirming the capture of the 34-year-old within the next few days.

“Matthew hasn’t figured regularly in the Kent side this year because there is a lot of competition for batting places but he is a player we’ve had our eye on for a while,” Grayson said.
