ILFORD Golf Club teed off the new year with their traditional captain’s drive-in, with member Ray Stevens taking up the reins for 2009.

Stevens, a member of the club for over 30 years, has captained the club in the Leslie Wood and Thornton Cup and he took to the tee at the weekend to signal the start of his regime with a drive down the fairway.

With a number of members gathered along the length of the hole, Stevens managed to slice his shot onto the adjacent fairway, cueing a mad dash for the ball.

He will be joined by Dave Curran, who was appointed vice captain.

Meanwhile, on the competition front, Terry Wheeler and Matt Bayford won the fourth round of the winter fourball stableford on countback.

The pair prevailed ahead of the father and son combination of Michael and Matthew Pinner and the team of Dave Spencer and Sean Kinsella despite all three teams posting a score of 44 points.
