A BOXER from Theydon Bois has returned home as European champion after winning gold at the continent’s largest amateur tournament.
Casey O’Riordan triumphed in the under-63kg category, beating a fighter from Manchester in the final in Sweden to claim the title at the prestigious Angered Box Cup recently.
O’Riordan, who trains at Newham Boxing Club, first received a bye in the quarter-finals before meeting Denmark’s Anders Bodin in his last four bout.
He fought a well-measured fight and did enough to win over the judges, prevailing on a majority decision.
Bridgewater Salford’s Kyle Shaughnessy was the final hurdle for the local boxer.
O’Riordan, who had found his stride after his first bout, was in even more impressive form as he produced a devastating performance, winning on a unanimous decision from the judges.
The popular competition saw 500 competitors from 114 clubs across Europe take part.
And there was even more success for the Newham club as another of their fighters also took gold, while a third returned with a silver medal.
